The Roman-Catholic parish church of Bad Kissingen parish, built in the neo-Gothic style, is located in the centre of town, amidst a small park.
Not enough room for the numerous spa guests
Due to the rapidly increasing number of Christian spa guests at that time in Bad Kissingen, the St. James Church by the town hall was bursting at the seams, rendering attendance at church impossible at times. An additional service per day had to be held for spa guests only, in order to attempt to meet the needs.
Therefore, the town needed a new, larger Catholic church. However, King Ludwig I rejected the building application in 1844. Only in 1860 was the construction of the Sacred Heart Church approved under the reign of King Maximilian II Joseph. However, the construction project could not be realised at first for several reasons, including the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. The construction work as approved by King Ludwig II did not start until 1881 and the foundation stone was laid on 25 March 1882. After two years, on 31 August 1884, Bishop Dr. Franz Josef Stein from Würzburg consecrated the new church.
Editorial tips on the Sacred Heart Church
The cornerstone ceremony on 25 March took place on the Feast of Annunciation. Exactly 9 months before Christmas, Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced the birth of her son.
