The monument was erected in 1907 in honour of Empress Elisabeth, better known as “Sisi”, on Altenberg hill in the Garitz neighbourhood.
Empress Sisi in Bad Kissingen
The empress, 24 years old at that time, visited Bad Kissingen for the first time on 2 June 1862 for spa treatment. For the last time she visited in April 1898 - shortly before her death. The empress visited Bad Kissingen a total of six times, using the pseudonym “Countess of Hohenems”. Her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph I, also came a few times to visit his wife. The last picture depicting the couple together was taken during a walk in Bad Kissingen.
Editorial tips on the Sisi memorial
During her stays in Bad Kissingen, Sisi occupied a mansion on the Altenberg and enjoyed going for walks there. An official 3.3-kilometre walking trail “Sisi's Favourite Walk" takes you past her memorial.
